Information about the Miswak Toothbrush SWAK

 Historical Background

For many centuries, native populations have used so-called teeth brushing as a form of oral hygiene. In the Arab world, use of a form of teeth brushing is firmly rooted within religion.
In his writings, the Prophet Mohammed (SAS) teached about the use of the Miswak twig.
Also in the history of India, the use of a a form of wood for teeth can be found in ancient writings embedded in religion and medicine, as well as in the work of the Ayurvedic doctor Susruta from the 6th Century BC.

Prior to the introduction of the toothbrush in the 18th Century in Central Europe, twigs made from willow have been used for oral hygiene.

As early as 1924, a toothbrush similar to SWAK was registered as a patent by a dentist in Berlin Dr. Bruno Möhring.

The SWAK-Toothbrush

The SWAK-Toothbrush is a fusion between the traditional Miswak dental care product and the modern tuft toothbrush, which usually comprises of nylon bristles.
The bristle head ("stranded heads") of the SWAK-Toothbrush is produced from the soft fibrous twigs of the "toothbrush tree" (Salvadora persica L.), which is widespread in in the bushy plains of Afrika, the orient and east India.
The specially frayed bristle heads can simply be screwed onto the reusuable holder.

The plastic holder is manufactured in Germany from renewable raw materials (cellulose).

What is the advantage of using the SWAK-Toothbrush

In direct comparison to conventional toothbrushes, SWAK demonstrates a more optimal cleaning efficiency.
Damage cause by use of a normal toothbrush, which are often diagnosed in dental practicaes, are not observed when correctly using the SWAK-Toothbrush

Simultaneously, the user has a more comfortable, softer cleaning feeling due to the special surface properties of the frayed Miswak-bristle heads.

With the SWAK-Toothbrush, all teeth surfaces are thoroughly and mildly cleaned, with the exception of the fissures and interdental spaces.

Effective ingrediants of the Miswak-bristle heads

The Miswak twig comprises of natural substances, which are advantageous to the overall health of the teeth and oral mucosa, which are:

Fluoride

Silicate

mild abrasives

Vitamin C

Tannine

Saponine

Flavonoids

In professional circles, natural bristles are often rejected due to hygenic reasons. This however only applies to brishes with an animal origin i.e. whose brushes are comprised of haires, which can be colonised by bacteria.
Natural brushes made fron wood are from a hygenic point of view, almost the same as nylon brushes.

Use of SWAK

Plaque is thoroughly and gently removed, also at hard to reach places where a normal toothbrush has difficulties, which may result in teeth and gum damage.

How?
When brushing with the SWAK-Toothbursh, the moistened heads move gently over the tops of the teeth. Plaque is then removed from the teeth.

How often?
Once daily is sufficient.
At the earliest, plaque bacteria starts to produce acids following 24 hours, thus attacking teeth.

How long?
You only need to clean your teeth until each tooth feels smooth.
Tongue control usually demonstrates whether there is plaque remaining on the teeth. With the tip of your tongue, you can check each tooth.
Plaque feels rough and furry, clean teeth are smooth!
